David Mann is compelled by the question, “Can a painting communicate by virtue of its inherent phenomenon?” Fascinated with the poetry of scientific research and with the visual resonance and mystery of the intimately minute and the infinitely vast, he unabashedly embraces beauty, but intends for beauty to be a means to an experience, not an end in itself. The mystery and authority of scientific references inform his work in conjunction with inventive processes of making: multiple transparent layering disrupted with dispersions and forms that articulate the space and suggest rich, dense activity below the surface. Formations in his paintings can be seen as a visual parallel to the activity of genesis and dissipation in cellular and microscopic bodies that are in turn analogous to cosmic formations. He imbues these paintings with pervasive inner light—glowing orbs that telegraph and project light and energy to each other and to the viewer.
