Peculiar juxtapositions mark Jeffrey Schiff’s installations. Through over thirty years of making art he has explored the way the human hand transforms the natural world, and how we decode objects and images when they are out of context—navigating the interplay of rationality and custom, or order and disorder. Perception of disjunction triggers our imagination. Employing patterns and depth, he poises pieces between literal rendering and personal invention. Dark rigid brackets seem to capture wispy passing clouds. Prosaic objects are embedded in granite plinths. Rounded stones penetrate photographic space. The Brooklyn artist fuses oriental carpet to concrete and reduces them to rubble, confounding expectations of how these materials might meet in daily use or art. Schiff often focuses on a particular cultural and historical period, but threads that weave through all his work are conflicting views of globalism, contingent relationships between parts and whole, and skepticism about the commercial/scientific enterprise in the information age.
